Activities of Access Kanchanpur (Fifth Cohort)

Kanchanpur Access Graduation

On July 1, 2017, graduation ceremony of Kanchanpur Access center was held at Hotel Opera, Mahendranagar, Kanchanpur in which the fifth cohort Access graduates received certificates of completion of 2 years’ Access program from chief guest RELO Russell Barczyk. The program was attended by 40 Access students and their parents, NELTA Kanchanpur executives, and Access instructors. Access Coordinator, Kunjarmani Gautam conducted the program. In the program, NELTA Kanchanpur Chair Uttam Bist gave a welcome speech expressing his happiness in successfully running the Access program in Kanchanpur. Two Access students, Abhishekh Bhatt and Asmita Ojha shared their Access experience and Access instructor Prithvi Raj Bhatt talked on behalf of the instructors. In his remark, RELO Russell Barczyk encouraged the graduating students to become a part of Alumni Association and strengthen their academic and career background through online learning. In the program, 40 Kanchanpur Access students received certificates of completion of 2 years’ Access program from chief guest RELO Russell Barczyk. At last, NELTA Senior Vice-President Laxman Gnawali gave vote of thanks; in his address, he thanked NELTA Kanchanpur, Access instructors,  and parents for their support in the successful implementation of Access program.

Kanchanpur Access Distributes Garbage Cans

Access Kanchanpur distributed garbage cans on March 8, 2017 as a community service program. Access Kanchanpur bought some garbage cans, paint, brush and stickers with the support from English Language Fellow Deborah Silver. Access students wrote slogans and painted on the garbage cans at the Access Center. Then all students, teachers and Ms. Silver walked along the busy market road of Mahendranagar carrying the garbage cans. Students went from shop to shop, interacting with the shop owner and customers about their thoughts on waste management. Then the shop owners were given the garbage cans at a subsidized rate. Students and teachers decided not to give the materials free of cost as they thought that the people will take it for granted but instead took some minimal amount so that the shop owners also feel some ownership towards it and use it for the purpose it was given to them. After selling those cans, some amount has been collected and Access Kanchanpur has decided to buy more garbage cans and distribute in the market in the same way.

Access Bids Farewell to Outgoing President Barack Obama

Access Kanchanpur conducted a farewell program for the outgoing president of USA Barack Obama on January 21, 2017. ELF, Deborah Silver, Access teachers and students attended the program. ELF Deborah Silver conducted the program separately for the two groups. At first, she briefly talked about the system of selection of presidents and their tenure in the USA. Then she shared about the condition of Negros in the America before and after the emancipation proclamation in the USA. She showed photos of the great leaders of America Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and Barack Obama, the outgoing President of USA to the students and shared about their great deeds in the American history. At the same time, she played the powerful speech by Martin Luther King entitled ‘I Have a Dream’ and some equally influential speeches by Mr. Obama. Then she highlighted on the personal and professional lives of Mr. Obama. She gave some handouts related to the life history of Barack Obama and Martin Luther King to the students to read and write about them very briefly on the separate pages. Finally, Access students shared briefly about the deeds of Mr. Obama and Martin Luther King and the ELF Deborah Silver wrapped up the class by addressing both leaders as the heroes of the USA.

Access Kanchanpur Painted Zebra Crossing

Kanchanpur Access students participated in the community service on 19 September, 2016. As a community service students painted the zebra crossings in one of the nearest roundabout from the center, Puspa Lal Chowk. Apart from painting the zebra crossings, the students helped the pedestrians to cross the road safely, they were divided into groups and they talked with pedestrians making them aware of traffic rules for two hours.
The community service center, Mahendranagar, district traffic office and HELP Nepal also joined and helped students for performing the community service. Before going on field, social activist and member of community service center, Mr. Sunil Ojha oriented the students about the whole activity.
Other members that joined the program included ELF Deborah Silver, NELTA Kanchanpur executive committee members and Access teachers.

Kanchanpur Access Marks American Independence Day

Access students of Kanchanpur celebrated American Independence Day on July 4, 2016. In the celebration, there were three special guests from the U.S. Embassy namely, Grachelle R Javellana, Grants Officer, Office of Press and Public Diplomacy, Russell Barczyk, Regional English Language Officer and Bishwa Raj Gautam, RELO specialist. All the Kanchanpur Access students, Access instructors, NELTA Kanchanpur chair, vice-chair and joint secretary attended and enjoyed the program. During the celebration students were taken to the ground which was more like a park that belongs to Shree Baijnath Model Higher Secondary School, which is five minutes’ walk away from the Access center.
During the celebration the students first decorated the ground with American flag and other decorative materials that the guests had brought with them. Then the students played fun games Wiffle ball and Frisbee with the guests. They enjoyed the games very much.
Throughout the two hours students danced, sang and played. The guests really appreciated the participation and performance of the students. The students then were engaged in the ‘Frisbee game with the music and the two winners (Access students Monika Khatiwada and Helen Joshi) were declared and the prize was distributed to them. Finally the celebration concluded with the small picnic with some delicious dishes. Before departing, the guests distributed the chocolates and shinning bracelets to all participants, the students handed the bouquet and took the group photo.

Commemoration of Earthquake 2015 Through Drama for Awareness

Kanchanpur Access students performed street drama entitled ‘Prepare Yourself for Earthquake’ on April 24, 2016 commemorating the devastating earthquake of April 25, 2015. Before starting the drama, there was an observance of silence for two minutes in the name of those people who lost their life in the earthquake. The Drama reflected the scenario during the Earthquake: the falling of Dharahara, injuries and casualties, rescue and relief operations. The drama also showed the dire conditions of earthquake victims who are still living under makeshift shelter even after a year from the earthquake. At the end of the drama, Access Students gave the information about the safety measures to be taken during the earthquake. A huge crowd was gathered to see the drama and the students performed the drama beautifully.

Kanchanpur Access Family on Excursion

Access Kanchanpur went on an excursion to Dhangadhi and Godawari of Kailali on January 9, 2016. They started their journey at 8:30 a.m. and reached Dhangadhi at 10:30 a.m. At first they visited the Aircrafts Museum located at Dhangadhi and got information about how this museum was built. All the Access students, Access instructors and NELTA Kanchanpur chair and secretary watched a short documentary sitting inside the museum. The documentary showed the beautiful tourist centres of Nepal, especially of the Far-west. Similarly, the cultural and religious practices of far-western region of Nepal were also highlighted in the documentary. All observed the beautifully kept models of airplanes and helicopters from the time of Wright brothers to date. All learnt that the museum was built by Captain Bed Upreti who served for several years as a domestic and international pilot. The manager of the museum and other staffers were there to provide necessary information. After this, some photos were taken inside the museum premises and all enjoyed their lunch at ‘Bells Parikar’. Then they headed to Godawari and enjoyed watching the natural vista.

Kanchanpur Access Marked International Education Week

Access alumni, Access students, Access instructors, NELTA Kanchanpur chair and vice-chair participated in a program entitled ‘Discussion on Empowering Women through Education in Far-western Region’ on 20th November, 2015 to mark International education week.

Mr. Rajendra Joshi, an Access instructor, moderated the program and other participants spoke in the program. Ms. Rekha Bist, Ms. Ramita Badu, Ms. Bipin Chandra Joshi, Mr. Milan Bhatt, Ms. Shikha Chand, Ms. Maheshwari Badu, Ms. Nisha Kalauni were the alumni who orated their views. They highlighted that women education is a must for uplifting their status, for eradicating social evils and domestic violence, and to bring about reformations in society. They also threw light on the fact that the status of women in the far-western Nepal is pitiable compared to the women in eastern and central Nepal. They gave the suggestion that women should be motivated to gain education both formally and informally to make their status equal to that of men and to make them aware of the injustice that they have been the victims of.

Puja Negi, Ritika Karki, Asmita Ojha, Arati Sapkota, Helan Joshi and Lab Kumar Malashi, the Access students, also shared their views focusing on the importance of education for women. They opined that women’s head is not held high in their locality, and that education is the only tool to uplift their status. Lab Kumar Malashi said, “ Domestic violence, violation of women rights, gender discrimination are the burning problems of the country”.

The Access instructor Mr. Prithvi Raj Bhatt and the vice-chair of NELTA Mr. Gambhir Chand also gave logical flow to the program adhering strictly to the necessity of awakening women by providing them with practical education in order that they can develop life skills in them.

Kanchanpur Access Organized Cleaning Campaign

On November 7, 2015, Kanchanpur Access students were involved in their first Community service program ‘Keep the Municipality Clean Campaign’. All the Access students were gathered at Madan Chowk, they were provided with masks, gloves and brooms; they started cleaning along the hospital road and Main Street, sweeping and collecting garbage; along the route Access students also interacted with the shopkeepers and consumers, making them aware of the importance of keeping the surrounding clean and how they can do so.

Activities of Access Kanchanpur( Third Cohort)

Access Students Participated in World Environment Day, 2014

On June 5, 2014, Access Kanchanpur-based students from both the groups participated in World Environment Day to make the students aware of the importance of Environment cleanliness and its advantages and how it  affects human life. All the Access students along with four Access instructors and the NELTA Executive members ( NELTA Chairman, Mr. Surendra Raj Ojha, NELTA Secretary Mr. Gambir Chand and the NELTA Treasurer, Mr. D. N. Joshi) went to the premises of the Orphanage hostel  to celebrate World’s Environment Day together with students of  Orphanage hostel.

Both the Access students and the students of the orphanage hostel gathered in the ground where the Access instructor, Mr. Uttam Bist started the program with the introduction session. After that, Access students Prem Baniya, Ramesh  Bohara,  Maheswari Badu gave the speech on ‘World’s  Environment Day’. Similarly, the student of the Orphanage hostel named  Jaylaxmi Joshi, Harish Bhatt also spoke a few words about the World’s Environment Day. Access Instructor, Mrs. Chadani Pant highlighted World’s Environment Day adding more brief statements Then, NELTA chairman Mr. Surendra Raj Ojha took a session on it and he explained all about the World’s Environment  Day.

Finally, NELTA  kanchanpur distributed the sanitation kit to all the hostel students and to  the hostel in-charge of the Orphanage hostel .The sanitation kit included toothpaste, tooth brush, hair oil, soap and toilet cleaner .

Access Students Participate in Mock Constituent Assembly(CA) Election 2070
Access Kanchanpur-based students from both the groups participated in the Mock CA election. To make the students know about the process and system of the election the students were given three political party options viz. Education Party, Agriculture Party and Tourism Party. Man Bahadur Chand was chosen as the president of the Agriculture Party, similarly PremBaniya was elected as the President of Education Party and Santosh Singh was elected as the president of Tourism Party. The presidents of all the parties then chose their cadres and other members. The students were divided into two constituencies and each political party gave nomination for direct poll in both the constituencies and three names for proportional election to the election commissioner (Mr. Bhim Chand, executive committee member) for five seats Constituent Assembly. Then Election Commissioner provided the political parties with their election symbol. Education Party got ‘Book’ as a symbol of their party, Agriculture Party ‘Corn Cub’ as a symbol and Tourism Party as ‘Himalayas’. After the nomination the political parties are given half an hour time were allocated for visiting and convincing to vote for their political party. All the political parties visited the public(rest of the students) and introduced their agendas and tried to convince public to vote for their political party. The NELTA Kanchanpur branch secretary Mr. Gambhir Chand was positioned as the booth coordinator in region no one and Mr. D.N. Joshi in region no. two. The Access teachers worked as other officers in the regions and NELTA KanchanpurPresident, Mr. Surendra Raj Ojha played the role of the observer.Then, the students caste the votes to their candidates.After the voting the officers counted the votes and result was declared, which is as follows:

Access Students Celebrate Thanksgiving Day 

Access Kanchanpur-based students from the thirdcohortcelebrated the Thanksgiving Day on Novmber 30, 2013. All the students and teachers attended the program on time, with lots of enthusiasm. There was an iteraction among studensts and teachers in their earlier classses about the Thanksgiving Day, it’s history and the way it is has been celebrated in  the U. S.. Students enjoyed watching various pictures related to the festival, Thanksgiving Day. On the vary day, the students from both the groups were invited and they were given a text which was related to the Thanksgiving Day. They comprehended the text for one hour whereas the teachers facilitated them. Then the students thanked those who deserve thanks in their life. They thanked their parents, their family members, and their teachers whereas some of them thankedthe U.S. Embassy and NELTA as well for launching Access Program in Kanchanpur. After that, we had a drawing session related to Thanksgiving. The students drew the greetings cards, pictures of turkey, mass potatoes, cranberry sauce, fruits and other food items that are eaten during the festival.Then, thestudents decorated a table with the menu items, which include roasted-chicken, mashed potatoes, beans, dessert(black forest) and salad (as other food items related to the Thanksgiving culture were not available locally).The teachers had worked hard to manage the foods.The teacher alongwith some students decotrated the table. All the Access Kanchanpur center students, teachers and NELTA Kanchanpur executives celebrated the Thanksgiving happily, which was the real flavour of the U.S. festival. NELTA Kanchapur Branch chair, advisors and other executive committee members also wished for the success of the program.

Kanchanpur Access Celebrates Flag Day

Kanchanpur-based Access students from the third cohort & Access teachers celebrated Flag Day in the presence of Mr. Bharat Babu Khanal, the Access Teacher Kathmandu Center on June 14, 2013.Before celebrating it, he shared his experience about celebrating Flag Day among we all four Access Teachers of Kanchanpur Center. After that he introduced himself among all Access Students formally and started his session on Flag Day celebration in the interactive way. Then he gave brief introduction about the origin of Flag Day and different states of the USA that celebrate the Flag Day. For making his session more interesting he sang a rhyme in which the students and teachers’ active participation was there. After this the students were shown the flags of both Nepal and America and asked the students get idea of making the flags. Meanwhile, Mr. Bharat Babu Khanal gave some guidelines to make the flag of USA. Then the Access students were divided into the eight groups of four and asked them to draw one/one flag of both countries. They were given one hour time to complete their task. While they were drawing the flags we all Access Teachers along with Mr. Khanal were facilitating the students. As a result our students made very beautiful flags of both countries. After making the flags the students were asked to be ready for a group photograph and we all took a photograph by holding the flags of both countries. Again in the closing session Mr. Khanal made all students participate in singing English rhymes and songs.  At last all Access students along with we all Access Teachers did farewell to Mr. Khanal, which was a  little bit sad moment for we all Kanchanpur Access Family.


English Access Microscholarship Program Inaugurated in Kanchanpur

In the presence of Prof. Dr. Jai Raj Awasthi, Vice-Chancellor, Far Western University, Ms. Susan Parker-Burns, Public Affairs Officer, U.S. Embassy, Kathmandu, Mr. Kamal Prasad Pokhrel, Director, Department of Education, Nepal and Mr. Fife MacDuff, RELO, U.S. Embassy Kathmandu, English Access Microscholarship Program has been launched in Kanchanpur on April 10, 2013. There was a gracious presence of other distinguished guests viz., Dr. Hem Raj Pant, Registrar, Far Western University, Mr. Rudra Prasad Pokhrel, Chief District Officer (CDO), Kanchanpur district, Mr. Ganga Ram Gautam, Focal Person, Access Program and Mr. Shyam B. Pandey, Country Coordinator, Access Program. The chief guest of the program, Prof. Dr. Jai Raj Awasthi, special guests, Ms. Susan Parker-Burns, Mr. Kamal Prasad Pokhrel and Mr. Fife MacDuff awarded the 40 Access students and four teachers with a certificate of award, which was singed by the U.S. Ambassador to Nepal Peter W. Bodde. All the selected 40 students are from different public schools of Kanchanpur district who will study English for two years under this program. Since this is a scholarship program, students don’t need to pay any kind of charge including the stationery expenses. The selected students will be exposed to three different areas viz., English language acquisition, cultural enhancement and leadership development for which they will take part in different indoor and outdoor activities. The program was chaired by Mr. Surendra Prasad Ojha, Chair, NELTA Kanchanpur branch.
