Lalitpur Access Graduation

On August 21, 2017, graduation ceremony of Lalitpur Access was held at Nepal Bar Association hall, Lalitpur in which the fifth cohort Access graduates received certificates of completion of 2 years’ Access program from chief guest Acting Public Affairs Officer, US Embassy, Kathmandu Andie De Arment. RELO Dennis Yang, NELTA President Motikala Subba Dewan, RELO Specialist Bishwa Raj Gautam, District Education Officer of Lalitpur were among the special guests in the program. In the program, NELTA Lalitpur Chair Bharat Babu Khanal welcomed the guests. RELO Dennis Yang spoke briefly about the importance of Education and congratulated the graduates. Access graduates Puja Paudel and Santosh Shrestha enthusiastically shared their experience of being an Access student, Gokul Ghimire Sharma spoke on behalf of teachers. The chief guest Andie De Arment expressed her words of happiness and best wishes, and she awarded the students and teachers with the certificates of graduation. The program was conducted by Access Coordinator Mr. Kunjarmani Gautam.

A Day with Tibetan Access Students of Himalayan Roots To Fruits

All the Access students and instructors from Lalitpur Access center visited Himalayan Roots to Fruits Access Center at Namgyaol Middle School Swoyambunath on May 29, 2017, Monday from 10:00am to 5:00pm. The bus departed from Lalitpur at 9 am and returned from Swoyambunath at 5 pm. There were 6-7 breakout sessions plus a “getting to know you” session and a final activity with all students together with 30 minutes lunch time. The events started at 10 O’ clock. The events included Art (posters, drawings, etc); Board games and word cards, Writing activity, Outdoor games/ball/grammar, and Songs/Music. The activities were conducted by Ivy Atlas Silverman, Gokul Ghimire Sharma, Bharat Babu Khanal, Kalpana Paudel, Mandira Adhikari, Gakul Thapalia, Tsering Dolker, and Salma Subba.

Lalitpur Access Participate in Bagmati Cleaning Campaign

On Saturday, February 11, 2017, Access Center Lalitpur participated in a community service program ‘Bagmati Clean-up Campaign’. They reached Tinkune, Kathmandu, the venue at 7:00 a.m. The national campaigners welcomed them with great joy. They were introduced with the other 11 organizations volunteering that day. They were provided with gloves and masks before the cleaning. They shared information about keeping environment clean including rivers and rivulets. They also shared that the children below 14 years weren’t suppose to collect garbage from the river rather they were supposed to participate in the awareness program. So, Access students and teachers went for the march in the rally chanting slogans and holding banners to keep the environment clean. The students went on a door-to-door campaign requesting the public to support in the activities wholeheartedly. They also visited local shops and asked them about their waste management and made them aware of importance of keeping environment including the ‘Bagmati river’ clean. Students also visited the ‘Civil Hospital’ and collected information about the proper waste management done by the hospital. Dr. Bikash Sapkota and staff nurse Anjana Neupane informed them about different types of waste produced in the hospital and the process of disposal of such waste. After that, they cleaned the street by picking up the garbage and disposed them in a designated place. Before the termination of the program, an informative and patriotic song was sung by the organizers for refreshment and circulating the crucial message of ‘proper waste management’ to the public. The programme was initiated in the coordination with Kishor Singh Shahi, Bagmati Cleaning Campaign activist.

Access Lalitpur Bids Adieu to Barack Obama, the outgoing President of USA

Lalitpur Access bid farewell to Mr. Barack Obama organizing a program on Sunday, January 22, 2017 from 4:30 pm to 6 pm. In the program, 40 students from Lalitpur Access center and instructors were present. At first students were asked what they knew about Mr. Obama. Then all watched the video of Obama’s farewell speech. Afterwards, students were provided handouts with information about the outgoing President, they were divided into 8 different groups. The groups were instructed to discuss about the contribution made by Mr. Obama and present their group’s ideas in front of the class. Finally, a member from each group came in front and spoke about the contribution made by the 44th President of USA Mr. Barack Obama.

Workshop on Digital Storytelling

On Saturday, January 21, 2017 from 9 to 11 am Film Expert, Kristine Samuelson conducted a workshop on ‘Digital Story Telling’ in Lalitpur Access center. 50 participants from Lalitpur Access center and member of Access Alumni Association, Nepal attended the workshop. Her presentation highlighted on different types of shots in different situation for developing short movie, documentaries, and fiction movies. She showed some examples of short movie of homeless people and poetic movie shot in the US by her and her students.

Visitor at Lalitpur Access

Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Ms. Evan Rayn visited Access center in Lalitpur on September 30, 2016, Friday at 3:30 pm. This is the first time a high ranking official from Washington had visited the Access Center in Lalitpur. NELTA President Meera Shrestha, NELTA Secretary Kunjarmani Gautam, RELO US Embassy Russel Barczyk, RELO Specialist Bishwa Raj Gautam were among the guests who accompanied the visit of Assistant Secretary Rayn. 40 Access students, 4 Access instructors from Lalitpur, the focal person of the Access program in Lalitpur were present on the occasion. Ms. Rayn was welcomed by Access students and NELTA Executives. Students Kabiraj Thakur, Puja Paudel, and Bipul Shakya gave presentations about the Zoo Cleaning Campaign, Blood Donation, Tree Plantation Campaign and ongoing Access activities. Students and guests participated in the discussion activity. The discussion was really overwhelming. Discussions were based on the American and Nepalese culture, context, occupation, education, gender issues, and woman empowerment issues.

Animal Feeding and Zoo Clean-up Campaign

The fifth cohort of the English Access Microscholarship Program, Lalitpur, Nepal, conducted animal feeding and zoo cleaning campaign on March 31, 2016 at The Central Zoo, Jawalakhel, Lalitpur. The program was conducted by the Access teachers with the involvement of all eighty Access students. At first, students were given instructions about the animal feeding by Ms. Renuka Bhandari. Students were informed about the food given to the animals of the zoo and how the food is prepared. Afterwards, they were taken to the central kitchen and were divided into four groups by Mr. Arun Rana who informed them about the group division of animals in the zoo and the classification of food to the different groups. Each group of students closely observed the preparation of food and were directly involved in feeding the animals. After feeding animals, students cleaned up the zoo premises. Finally, group leaders from each group presented on what they did including their reflection of the program. Two of our students were also interviewed by a local FM station, Uzzyalo 90 network, regarding the changes in the zoo, where students presented their views confidently. Access Assistant Coordinator, Ms. Prathana Basukala observed the whole program and encouraged students to be more actively involved in community service program at their locality.

Inauguration of Lalitpur Access Fifth Cohort

On January 22, 2016, the students of Lalitpur Access center fifth cohort received commencement certificate of English Access Microscholarship Program in an inaugural ceremony organized at Nepal Bar Association hall, Lalitpur. The Chief Guest of the program was Public Affairs Officer of US Embassy Mr. Tristram Perry who was welcomed heartily by NELTA central committee executives and NELTA Lalitpur branch executives. Main guests in the program were District Education Officer Mr. Dil Nath Puri and representative from Lalitpur District Development Committee Mr. Ramchandra Lamgade. In the program, at first chief guest Mr. Tristram Perry and guest RELO Mr. Russel Barczyk had an interaction with the Access students. The program was formally inaugurated by lighting of the ceremonial Panas by Mr. Tristram Perry. Access Focal Person Mr. Hemanta Raj Dahal welcomed the guests and participants. In his remarks addressing the crowd, Mr. Tristram Perry encouraged Access students to take maximum benefit of the resources of the Access program and wished for their better future. Main guest Mr. Dil Nath Puri stated that the co-teaching and teacher training modality implemented in Access program is one of the best model and he asked the US Embassy to support in extending this program in all 75 districts of Nepal, he also expressed his commitment as a District Education Officer to support in this process. NELTA President Ms. Meera Shrestha mentioned that collaborating with the US Embassy in implementing Access program in Nepal has been an opportunity for NELTA to contribute towards the mission of government of Nepal in providing quality education. In the program, the Eighth Volume of Access Newsletter was released; the newsletter is an effort in informing people about the Access activities and it’s a platform for the Access students to showcase their writing skills and art works. At the end of the program, RELO Mr. Russel Barczyk awarded the students and teachers with the certificates of commencement. The program was attended by Access students of fifth cohort Lalitpur and their parents and Lalitpur Access instructors. The program was conducted by Access coordinator, Mr. Sagun Shrestha.

Thanksgiving Day Celebration at Access Lalitpur

Access students in Lalitpur observed Thanksgiving Day at Access Center Lalitpur on 26 November, 2015. The basic focus of the celebration was to teach the importance of Thanksgiving Day in USA to the Access students. Mr. Sagun Shrestha, Access coordinator, Ms. Prathana Basukala, assistant coordinator, Mr. Bharat Babu Khanal, Lalitpur NELTA chair, Mr. Dinesh Thapa, secretary and Mr. Sanjaya Timalsina, treasurer were present in the program. In the program, Mrs. Kalpana Poudel presented the concept of Thanksgiving Day, Mr. Gokul Sharma presented Thanksgiving Day songs to the students, Mr Radha Krishna Humagain presented the concept of Thanksgiving moments in the Nepalese context and Mrs. Mandira Adhikari conducted quiz contest for the students to confirm the level of retention of information in them. Access students very much enjoyed Thanksgiving celebration by singing Thanksgiving songs, participating in the quiz contest and receiving prizes, expressing gratitude to each other, taking part in question answer session that would take place after teachers’ presentation and enjoying some delicious food in the end. The program was attended by 50 participants. The program was held at 4:30pm.

Lalitpur Access Marked International Education Week

Access students in Lalitpur organized the event with Access Alumni to mark the international education week at Access Center Lalitpur on Friday, November 20, 2015. The program was conducted by the Access Alumni. A total number of six students made PowerPoint presentation to discuss the benefits of education. The program totally focused on the importance of education, the history of education in US and Nepal, difference in Education in US and Nepal, women education in US and Nepal, the US and Nepalese education system and the problems faced by students in US and Nepal. The presentations were made by Binod Khadka, Daya Paudel, Ukesh Thapa, Aayusha Acharya, Smriti Baniya and Nikit Thapa respectively. At the end, Access instructor conducted a language activity to show the differences and similarities: America and the Nepal. The programme was conducted by an Access alumnus, Daya Paudel.

Reader’s Club Formed at Access Lalitpur

Access Lalitpur formed a Reader’s Club on November 21, 2015. The program was conducted by the Access teachers with the involvement of both groups. At first, students were introduced with PowerPoint presentation by Access instructor. Mandira Adhikari and then twenty students from both the groups were selected for the activity to be conducted.

The club decided to review the story book ‘Accessing English through Stories’ this time as it would motivate Access students to read the creations from Access Alumni.

Lalitpur Access Conducts First Parent’s Meeting

Access Center Lalitpur, organized a Parent Teacher Interaction Program at its center at Kumaripati, Lalitpur on October 10, 2015. Parents and guardians of 40 Access students were present at the occasion. The program was chaired by NELTA Chair Mr. Bharatbabu Khanal. During the program, NELTA Chair Bharatbabu Khanal talked about NELTA activities and Vice Chair Gokul Ghimire Sharma highlighted about the Access program in Lalitpur. Discussion took place on the nature of the Access program such as selection criteria, curriculum, dress code, class hour, regularity and many more. Access teachers briefed on the various facets of Access program through PowerPoint presentations; Access teacher Mr. Rajendra Kumar Humagain talked about leadership development in Access, Ms. Kalpana Paudel briefed on cultural enhancement and the Access activities, and Ms. Mandira Adhikari talked about language acquisition in Access classes.

Activities of Access Lalitpur (Third Cohort)

Lalitpur Access Students Visit Shangri-la Orphanage Home

Access students and teachers from Lalitpur went to Shangri-la Orphanage Home at Chapagaun organizing a Community Service Program on July 26, 2014. First of all, they visited the orphanage school and the vocational training center. They observed the pottery, tailoring, and carpentry training center.  Then after, they went to the orphanage. On reaching the spot, all the students, teachers and the members of the home gathered at the program hall for the formal program.The head warden, Ms. Meena Rijal and the principal of the school Mr. Deepak Maharjan were felicitated by the Program Coordinator Mr. Shyam Bdr. Pandey and Assistant Program Coordinator Mr. Sagun Shrestha applauding their good work they have incepted. Teachers and students then handed the donation over to the orphanage.

Access children entertained the children of the orphanage with songs with a message of necessity of going to schools, showed them dances in English songs, and performed drama based on a social issue. The orphanage children also showed their talents.

Christmas Celebration in Lalitpur

Lalitpur-based Access students from the Third Cohort, Access teachers and ex-students from the Alumni celebrated the Christmas program at Lagankhel, Lalitpur on December 25, 2013 at 4:30 PM on Wednesday.  At first, Access students gathered at the Access center at 4:30. The Access teachers presented a PowerPoint presentation on the history of celebrating the Christmas festival and highlighted its importance. The students were shown a video on the birth of Jesus Christ.Six ex-students from the Access Alumni Association helped the Access students to make the Reindeer hat.  The Access students found it interesting since they had never made the hat before.  The ones who finished first played a game called fixing the Reindeer’s nose on a big chart paper which was fixed on the wall. They were blind-folded and had to fix the nose of the reindeer on the picture. The ones who could fix the nose were provided with small prizes.Finally, everyone sang the song Jingle Bells, danced on the music and cut a Christmas cake. The Access Alumni Members shared their experiences with the Access students from NELTA Lalitpur. Students were excited to take part in such a program. For many of them, it was the first Christmas celebration in their life.

Orientation Program at Access Lalitpur

On  April 11, Lalitpur access conducted the orientation class for the new Access students of third cohort in the presence of the Program Assistant, Mr. Sagun Shrestha to make them know the details that they have to do during their regular classes. The same day, they too divided different groups ensuring balance in gender.
