Access Activities

Surkhet Access Graduation

Surkhet Access Center organized the Graduation Ceremony to felicitate Access students and teachers with the Access graduation certificates on the successful completion of two years’ Access Program on July 29, 2019. On the program, there was the gracious presence of Mr. Bishwa Raj Gautam, RELO Program Specialist, US Embassy, Mrs. Mohan Maya Dhakal, the Deputy Mayor, Birendranagar Municipality, Surkhet, Mr. Bhoj Prasad Lamsal, the Head, Education Development and Co-ordination Unit, Surkhet, Mr. Thamma Prasad Gautam, Ward Chair, Birendrangar Municipality, Ward No. 10, Surkhet, Mr. Bishnu Kumar Khadka, the President, NELTA Karnali Province, Mr. Kunjarmani Gautam, Coordinator, English Access Microscholarship Program, Nepal, the head teachers of feeder schools, guardians and students. The students presented their achievements through stall presentations, songs, dances and speech. The masters of ceremony were Bibek Adhikari and Asmita Acharya. The Deputy Mayor Bhandari expressed her appreciation for the contribution of Access Program. She also expressed her wish that this program will continue in the future as well. The Head of Education Development and Coordination Unit, Surkhet praised the changes seen in the students. The program was concluded by the President of NELTA Karnali Province after the certificate distribution to the Access teachers and students.

Visit to Manav Sewa Ashram

Surkhet Access Center students along with 5th Cohort Access Alumni of Surkhet Access Center collaborated on a community service program to hand over some food items to the rescued street dwellers sheltered now at Manav Sewa Ashram. Manav Sewa Ashram is working all over the country to rescue street dwellers. The Ashram is rescuing helpless and often problematic people from the streets of cities and villages. The service is possible only because of personal donations from generous donors in the society. To help on this noble cause, Access students and Access Alumni managed some food items and handed over to the Ashram family. The students felt real satisfaction to help those people who have suffered a lot in their lives. The Ashram is currently serving 35 mentally and physically retarded street dwellers. Fifteen have already been reunited with the family after the recovery. Ms. Sanjita Gautam, The Assistant Coordinator of Manav Sewa Ashram, Surkhet interacted with the students and described the operation modality of Ashram. She expressed her gratitude to the Access family for showing the appreciation for Ashram’s efforts to make the streets free from suffering people.

Visit to Informational Exhibition of Nepal Army

Surkhet Access Center organized a visiting program in ‘People with Military Program and Army Exhibition’ at Kali Box Gan under North-western Army Headquarters, Surkhet on June 15, 2019. The students from both groups were taken to the Exhibition as an enhancement activity. The students observed the historical photos, weapons and armaments in the exhibition. The photos were the collection of the history of Nepal Army, contribution of Nepal Army in conservation of the national parks, wildlife reserves, participation in developmental activities and social participation on the theme “Nepal Army from History to Present” including the effort of Nepal Army during the World War I and World War II. The varieties of weapons, guns, bullets used from the period of World War to present were shown there. In addition, in the exhibition, different military equipment, military engineering, means of communication, special vehicles for war, disaster management equipment and documentary of Nepal Army including then and now. The exhibition was free for general public ensuring assistance to make civil military relation strong. The Access students were well guided by the Access instructors and facilitated by the facilitators of the program.

New Year’s Eve 2076 Celebration

Surkhet Access Center celebrated New Year’s Eve-2076 on April 13, 2019.  The program was really exciting for the students as various activities were carried out in the program, such as, preparing and providing greeting cards, writing and sharing the best wishes for the big festival’ Ram Nawami’ as well, followed by New Year 2076. First of all the access instructors shared their best wishes and let students do the same individually. The program concluded with a mini celebration – A Cheese Cake Cutting Ceremony.

Surkhet Access Visits Mid-Western University

Surkhet Access Center students and teachers visited Mid-Western University on January 19, 2019. The visit was planned to encourage Access students to develop a positive outlook towards higher education. The visit started with the insights on higher education from Mr. Devendra Labh Karna, Assistant Campus Chief, Central Campus of Engineering Faculty of MWU. He explained the importance of engineering field. He shed light on the criteria to enter into the engineering stream and the future prospects of studying the faculty. He elaborated on various areas that the students can look for a good career. After the fruitful talk session, students observed various laboratories including computer lab, electrical lab, thermodynamics lab, construction lab, concrete lab, fluid mechanics lab, etc. of Engineering Faculty. Mr. Bishwanath Yadav, the Head of Department of Civil Engineering briefed on the importance of labs in the department. He demonstrated how those lab experiments help to make our everyday life easier and safer. The visit was very much informative to the students. There was also gracious presence of Mr. Bishnu Kumar Khadka, the President, NELTA Karnali Province and Mr. Rajan Kumar Kandel, the Chairperson, NELTA, Surkhet in the program.

Surkhet Access Joins ‘Clean Surkhet Green Surkhet’ Movement

Surkhet Access Center students and teachers gathered at Bulbule Lake, a popular tourist destination and a famous picnic spot, to show their solidarity to ‘Clean Surkhet Green Surkhet’ movement initiated by WINGS Foundation on January 12, 2019. This cleaning campaign has reached 26th week on January 12, 2019. Surkhet Access Center joined the campaign as part of its community service. The lake surrounding was filled with garbage. The students worked collaboratively with other volunteers to clean the area. After cleaning the area, Dr. Nawaraj KC, the pioneer of the movement shed light on the ecological importance of the lake. He also shared his purpose of this initiation. His words were very inspiring. He also shared his memories of being a student and also showed his interest to work more with Access students in near future as well. He extended his gratitude towards Access Program family for supporting the cause. There was also the presence of Mr. Dipendra Khatri, the Focal Person, Surkhet Access Center and Mr. David Arnold, English Language Fellow (ELF) in the program.

New Year 2019 Celebration in Access

Surkhet Access Center celebrated New Year’s Eve-2018 on December 31, 2018. Both Access groups were present and there was a special presence of English Language Fellow (ELF) Mr. David Arnold in the program. The program was really exciting for the students. Various activities were carried out in the program, such as, preparing and providing greeting cards, sharing and writing the best memories of the year 2018 and resolutions for the New Year 2019. First of all, the students prepared the greeting cards individually with the help of the Access teachers. Then, Mr. Arnold shared about the celebration customs of New Year in the USA, students were quite amused to learn about it. After that students were asked to decorate two different charts by writing their best memories of the previous year and new-year resolutions. Then, the Access instructors along with the ELF shared their best memories of 2018 and resolutions for New Year 2019 and let students point out their best memories and resolutions. Later, the students scribbled their best memories of the previous year and new-year resolutions on the charts, individually. The program concluded with a mini feast.

Thanksgiving Day Celebration

Surkhet Access Center observed Thanksgiving Day on November 22, 2018. Mr. David Arnold, English Language Fellow (ELF), facilitated the session introducing the students to the festivities of Thanksgiving in the USA. The students had a wonderful time with Mr. David Arnold and got an opportunity to listen to someone with first-hand experience of Thanksgiving. Mr. Arnold shared his memories of Thanksgiving Day celebration with family and friends back in the US. He explained very vividly all the activities his family and neighbors did during the holiday. Afterwards, students made drawings on the theme of Thanksgiving Day. Then, Mr. Arnold presented the videos of food items prepared and eaten during Thanksgiving. The highlight was the turkey. The students also enjoyed the live streaming of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade from the USA. Finally, the students enjoyed the popcorn and sweet dessert as Thanksgiving feast.

Surkhet Access on a Field Trip

Surkhet Access students and teachers visited Gothikanda Hill on top of Birendranagar, Surkhet on October 09, 2018 in support of Mr. David Arnold, English Language Fellow for Mid-Western University, Surkhet and RELO, US Embassy, Kathmandu. In the trip, there was presence of Mr. David Arnold and his family, Mr. Dipendra Khatri, Focal Person of Surkhet Access Center and Mr. Bishnu Kumar Khadka, NELTA Karnali Province President as the guest in the trip. There were altogether 46 members including students and teachers in the trip. On reaching the destination, students enjoyed various games namely, bottle flipping, charade, relay race, language games, eating competition, role play game, kite flying and hot potato, along with a delicious picnic. The trip was very exciting and memorable; students got ample opportunity to talk with the native speakers in a friendly environment.

Surkhet Access in American Corner

Surkhet Access Center visited American Corner Surkhet to carry out several activities on July 7, 2018. Mr. Hirdesh Kumar KC, on behalf of American Corner Surkhet, welcomed the students at the Corner. At first, each of the students were assigned to choose a book and complete the worksheet. After this activity, Mr. Hirdesh Kumar KC demonstrated the ‘Maker’s Space’. The students enjoyed the ‘sensor powered car’ and lots of other gadgets. They showed great interest in the space and wished to visit the space in their leisure. The students also enjoyed the musical sessions by Mr. Rabin Khadka. Mr. Khadka, a volunteer musician, guitarist at American Corner Surkhet, interacted with students about music and his experience. Students showcased their singing talents as well. The students expressed their desire to join music classes which was warmly accepted by Mr. Khadka.

RELO Program Specialist Visits Surkhet Access

RELO Program Specialist Bishwa Raj Gautam visited Surkhet Access Center on July 2, 2018. Mr. Gautam refreshed the students asking them how they enjoyed the Access Camp and how they are enjoying the Access class. He encouraged the students as well as the instructors in order to be engaged in active participation in English Access Microscholarship Program. He created a friendly environment for the students to overcome their hesitation while presenting their ideas, feelings, experience and so on. Mr. Bishnu Kumar Khadka, the President, NELTA Karnali Province and Dipendra Khatri, the Focal Person of Surkhet Access Center were also present on the occasion to encourage the students.

Community Awareness on Importance of Safe Drinking Water

Surkhet Access Center students and teachers conducted rally entitled ‘Community Awareness Program on Importance of Safe Drinking Water’ on June 30, 2018 in Birendranagar, Surkhet in the presence of Bishnu Kumar Khadka, President, NELTA Karnali Porvince, Dipendra Khatri, Focal Person of Surkhet Access Center, Access Instructors and the students. The placards were designed including the slogans related to safe drinking water. The Access students were really excited and engaged enthusiastically to get involved in rally. The rally began from the Access Center rounding Khajura, Kalinchowk, and Industrial Zone to Itram.

The students understood the importance of safe drinking water and developed a sense of responsibility towards awaring people safe drinking water.

Earth Day Celebration

Surkhet Access Center celebrated the Earth Day on April 22, 2018 AD. at Surkhet Access Center. First of all, the students watched the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzQPp3Sk5v8) regarding the Earth Day. After that the teachers shared why the Earth Day should be celebrated. Then the students were divided into four groups, where they discussed the problem created by human activities and shared the possible solutions. Afterwards they sketched the picture of the Earth and wished ‘Happy Earth Day’.

Visiting Siddha Bahira School: A Community Service Project

Surkhet Access Center students and teachers visited Siddha Bahira School, a government-funded community school for deaf children located in Birendranagar, Surkhet on January 27, 2018. There were about 65 deaf students who stayed and studied at the school. Surkhet Access Center students and teachers volunteered to clean the surroundings and disposed the garbage properly. The students from the school also joined Access students to clean the school premises. The Access students were really excited and happy to help the children with special needs. After the cleaning program, Access students and the students from the Siddha Bahira School gathered for interaction. The school Principal Mr. Hridesh KC expressed his gratitude to the Access family for visiting the school and cleaning its surroundings. He made a commitment to keep the school area clean. Access center also donated some dustbins to be used for cleaning the premises on day-to-day basis.

Thanksgiving Day Celebration

All the students and instructors from Surkhet Access Center carried out art and drawing activities to celebrate Thanksgiving Day on November 25, 2017. The students watched the videos learning the vocabularies related to the celebration. The students fully enjoyed learning why Thanksgiving is celebrated and various customs related to it. They drew pictures and prepared paper art work to show their understanding of Thanksgiving Day.  From this activity, they learnt the reasons behind the Thanksgiving festivity. They also learnt the value of appreciation of other’s assistance in one’s life. They appreciated the meaning of gratitude in their life.

 

Inauguration Ceremony

Seventh cohort English Access Microscholarship program has been inaugurated in Surkhet amid the gracious presence of Mr. Bishwa Raj Gautam, RELO specialist, Mr. Hom Raj Khadka, NELTA center committee member, Mr. Kunjarmani Gautam, Access co-ordinator, Mr. Jit Bahadur Shah, District Education Officer, Surkhet NELTA, Surkhet Branch advisors, Executives and other stakeholders on October 17, 2017 at Hotel Valley View Cottage, Surkhet. All forty Access students received Access commencement certificates signed by US Ambassador Alaina B. Teplitz.
